Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes

Anything that says Philly Cheesesteak means it will be delicious and become a family favorite.  Although in these busy activity filled evenings, meal planning and preparation are not always a fun combination.  However you will always win the kids over with sloppy joes at dinner.  Now with this recipe, we show how it will become a grown up favorite too.  So, Mom & Dad, sit back and enjoy this kid-friendly meal with a glass of red wine.  When choosing a wine from our club any of the Cab Sav pairings will be amazing with this recipe.  Especially those with berries, leather, even black currant. Today, I am choosing our Antoniou (pronounced An-toe-knee-oh) Cab Sav.

Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes

philly cheesesteak

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 bell peppers, chopped
  • 1 Garlic clove, minced
  • 1 lb. ground beef – already cooked
  • 1/2 c. beef broth
  • 2 tbsp. ketchup
  • 1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp. brown sugar
  • kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 4 slices provolone
  • 4 Hamburger buns

Directions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, heat vegetable oil. Add onion and bell peppers and cook, stirring often.  Do so until the vegetables are soft, about 5 minutes.
  2. Stir in the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds, then add the beef. Cook until no longer pink, 6 to 8 minutes. Drain fat.
(You can save yourself time on steps 1 & 2 by pre-browning the ground beef)
  3. Next, stir in beef broth, ketchup, brown sugar, and Worcestershire and season generously with salt and pepper. Simmer until most the liquid has reduced and the mixture is thick, 5 minutes.
  4. Top beef with provolone and cover skillet with a tight-fitting lid to melt, about 2 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and serve cheesy ground beef mixture in hamburger buns. Serve warm.

Yield: 4 sandwiches

Tip:  Need it “To Go”?  Grab that tinfoil, fill the buns with the mixture and wrap in tinfoil.  Less mess as the kids can eat them as they are partially wrapped up!

Option 1:  Instead of Hamburger buns, buy the hoagie buns or try in a wrap.

Option 2:  Use ground Turkey or Chicken instead of beef.

The Wine – An Exclusive Private Label

antoniou

The Antoniou is named after our own wine club connoisseur, Peter Antoniou, who looks after our wine selection. When choosing wines for their colors, aromas and flavors. This Cab Sav has an amazing blend of flavors and balance of tannins.

The red Ruby color in the glass is slightly translucent, however you will enjoy the aromas of licorice, the darker berries along with cedar and black currant. Additionally, it is recommended to enjoy this incredibly delicious wine to enhance the flavors of grilled meats, steaks, and sausages. Which when it comes to a fantastic Philly Cheesesteak sandwich, our Antoniou blends all the flavors well. I also enjoy a glass to sip on after the meal to continue to savor the amazing blends of flavors and aromas while chatting with my husband or other family and friends.

Again, this meal is perfect with any of our Cab Savs or even our Lava Wine brand, Charbonno. That is a great reason to join Our Wine of the Month Club, you are opening an entirely new menu plan to enjoy because every month the wine arrives with Tasting Notes.  These Tasting Notes are there to guide you in how to serve, suggesting foods that best enhance the flavors.  And all delivered to your door!
